Taking the example of a Swiss orthopaedic clinic, we can show the effectiveness of our approach to life cycle cost reduction: The repair and repair replacement costs for surgical instruments were reduced by 18.7% in 4 years. This was at the same time as a 22% increase in surgery activity. The bottom line is that this was a 33.4% cost reduction for the instruments required per surgical procedure in relation to the life cycle. An important factor was also the promise of repairing instruments within 5 working days. This meant the hospital avoided unnecessary investment costs in a large reserve stock.

Preservation of value and extension of the life cycle are positive effects brought about by regular maintenance of instrument sets. Regular maintenance and repairs raises the quality to the highest level. Hygiene and surface issues are therefore reduced.
Repair
Instruments are sent for repair if they are not working properly. They are then restored to full working order as per the norm. Customer-specific requirements can be implemented on request. Repair work includes a full reprocessing cycle. Our trained specialist staff ensure the quality of the repairs in the long-term and thus help keep life cycle costs down.

Flat-rate for repairs
When the instrument reaches the end of its life cycle or if it can no longer be repaired, the instrument is replaced by a new one. Optionally, this repair replacement can also be included in the flat rate.
To enable this, a few years back we started monitoring the reasons for repairs and rejections for each individual instrument.
By categorising the reasons for wear and tear (classed as "constant wear", "non-linear wear" and "sudden failure"), we were able to work with the customer on reducing the life cycle costs and clearly define the relevant responsibilities.

Correctly sharpened scissors mean less wear when cutting. The cutting and gouging behaviour of bone rongeurs depends on the jaw geometry; the correct gouging behaviour means minimal wear. In some cases, more lengthy procedures need to be carried out for repairs; however, these too pay off in the long-term over the life cycle of the instrument. For example, the screws in scissors are replaced instead of repaired. QENUS follows a holistic approach with the aim of sustainability.
Full compliance with regulatory requirements
The manufacture of medical devices is subject to strict regulations that are governed by statutory and regulatory requirements. Entities that provide the medical devices to end users are distributors and they must meet the legal requirements. In particular, people and companies who change originally compliant products under their own responsibility are also deemed to be distributors. Here at QENUS, we have long-established processes to ensure our products are fully traceable. This traceability also includes full documentation of the repairs carried out on each instrument. The regulatory requirements are therefore met in full. For years, our name has vouched for utmost compliance with regulatory requirements!
